Fressnapf searches for Germany’s most dog-friendly city

Who will win the “Golden Dog Bowl” in 2010? Specialty chain Fressnapf is looking for the German city with the greatest commitment to dog owners and their four-legged friends.

Dog lovers can vote online
Dog lovers have until 17th October to rate 40 German cities with a population of at least 200,000 at www.goldener-fressnapf.de. Fressnapf will also rate each city according to various criteria, including how much dog tax owners pay and the number and size of dog parks. The most dog-friendly city in Germany will be awarded the “Golden Dog Bowl” in November.

Incentives for even more dog friendliness
The “Golden Dog Bowl” has been awarded since 2009. The winning city receives a custom-made golden dog bowl and prize money of 5,000 euros. “The money is earmarked for projects that increase the quality of life for dogs in the city,” explains Fressnapf spokesman Achim Schütz. In this way, the “Golden Dog Bowl” functions as an incentive for German cities to increase their commitment to their four-legged residents. “We want to encourage Germany’s towns and cities to enable species-appropriate dog ownership in a liveable urban environment,” says Achim Schütz.

And the winner was… Erfurt!
Last year, Germany’s most dog-friendly city was chosen on the basis of 13 general, demonstrable criteria such as how much tax dog owners pay. The evaluation pointed to a clear winner – The prize went to the state capital of Thuringia, Erfurt. Wiesbaden was a close second, followed by Bavarian metropolis Munich in third place. This year, the opinion of German dog owners will also be included in the assessment. The online survey at www.goldener-fressnapf.de should reflect the opinions of dog owners and animal lovers. After all, who is in a better position to judge the dog friendliness of a city than someone who lives and takes Rover, Fido and friends for walkies there every day?

Dogs as valuable members of the community
Wet-nosed friends have long been a loved member of many families, and today play an increasingly important role in peoples’ lives. They fascinate, entertain and are companions and protectors, as well as comforters and therapists. A dog is an indispensable partner for older people or people with little social contact in particular, giving them unconditional attention and affection. This is reason enough for Fressnapf to honour the city that values this and that goes the extra mile for human-canine relationships.
