Fressnapf founder and proprietor Torsten Toeller received the German Retail Award 2010 on 16th November in Berlin. Europe’s leading specialty chain for pet food and accessories was honoured in the category of “Major Retail Chain Management Performance”.

“This award is a particular honour for us, and it’s an incentive for us to keep growing, working hard and enjoying what we do and to continue being successful,” said Torsten Toeller at the awards ceremony within the context of the German Retail Congress. “I would like to thank my fellow directors, all franchise partners and the almost 10,000 staff across Europe, because it’s them who have made our success possible.”

Since being founded in 1990, Fressnapf has undergone a rapid growth rate. With his groundbreaking idea of a large-scale, low-priced “specialty discounter” with a huge product range and expert advice, founder Torsten Toeller has placed it at the uncontested top of the German pet market. Fressnapf also occupies top positions in ten other European countries. Despite times of crisis, the company generated revenues of around 1.1 billion euros in the past financial year and thus occupies third place in the global ranking of pet store chains after the US-based companies PetSmart and PETCO. “New concepts, products and services promise immense growth potential across Germany and Europe in the future too,” added Toeller.

“With its concept, Fressnapf has broken all the rules that are there to be broken. The company is a ‘Category Killer’ par excellence such as I have experienced only rarely in my 24-year career as a consultant for family businesses,” said management consultant Prof. Dr. Arnold Weissman in his commendation.

The retail association “Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE)” has awarded the coveted distinction of “German Retail Award” for the ninth time this year. The award goes to important and trendsetting retailers and business personalities for outstanding performance and successful management. Companies were nominated in the three categories of “Major Retail Chain Management Performance”, “Management Performance, Medium-sized Enterprises” and “Lifetime Award”, a distinction for a life’s work.
