With rolling pins and biscuit cutters: Fressnapf bakes for Germany’s animal shelters

At Christmas time, Fressnapf turns its thoughts to the abandoned dogs and cats in Germany’s animal shelters. The company's mascots, Streifi and Flecki from the Fressnapf logo, will set out at the end of November to take Christmas gifts to 20 animal shelters throughout Germany. The four-legged Christmas messengers will be carrying Santa sacks with 5,000 dog biscuits and cat treats, hand-baked by Achim Schütz and Julia Stüeken from the Fressnapf press office. They spent a whole day wielding rolling pins and biscuit cutters at Horst Schuberth’s dog biscuit bakery in Neunkirchen-Seelscheid, Bergisches Land. Streifi and Flecki were also at the bakery in the form of animal mascots measuring almost 3 metres tall. They were full of festive cheer and ready to show that they love and care for other animals on their pre-Christmas tour of animal shelters.

Wholemeal flour, water and lots of delicious beef and lamb are the ingredients for dog biscuits and cat treats à la Horst Schuberth. “We’ve rolled, kneaded and baked non-stop”, says company spokesman Achim Schütz, with streaks of flour on his forehead. “After all, we had almost 100 kg of dough to get through. After more than eight hours at the oven, we were happy that we could send Streifi and Flecki off to the animal shelters with so many delicious treats.” Dog biscuit baker Horst Schuberth adds: “I gladly let the two press officers use my bakery for a day so that we could bake together for a good cause. I think Fressnapf’s dedication to animal welfare is wonderful.” Schuberth’s biscuits and treats are very easily digestible and do not contain any additives or preservatives. The dog baker assures that “there will be a proper Christmas feast in the animal shelters”.

Streifi and Flecki’s gift-giving tour begins on 25th November in the animal shelter at Krefeld, Fressnapf's company headquarters. The giant animal mascots will then travel in the Fressnapf mobile from shelter to shelter, where they will be eagerly awaited by hungry mouths. “It’s a lovely gesture that will be greatly appreciated by the staff and animals at the shelters”, explains Wolfgang Apel, president of the German animal welfare association. Beyond this gesture, Fressnapf will also be making a donation as part of the campaign. All 20 animal shelters will each receive two pallets of dog and cat food, worth over 1,000 euros. It’s a donation that the animal shelters desperately need. “Many of the mainly voluntarily run animal shelters
are on the brink of insolvency and animal protection work is under threat. Donations are decreasing, but without them and without the people who help us, the situation will get worse”, Apel stresses. “That’s why I would really like to thank Fressnapf and their local stores for their tireless commitment to animal welfare.”
