Fressnapf brings Christmas cheer to Germany’s animal shelters

At Christmas time, Fressnapf turns its thoughts to the abandoned dogs and cats that live in Germany’s animal shelters. Today, the company's mascots, Streifi and Flecki from the Fressnapf logo, set off to take Christmas gifts to 20 animal shelters throughout Germany. In their Santa sacks, the four-legged Christmas messengers will be carrying 5,000 hand-baked dog biscuits and cat treats. The two oversized soft toys, measuring just under 3 metres tall, want to show that they love and care for other animals with their delicious gifts. The mascots’ tour begins on Thursday November 25th in the Krefeld animal shelter and ends on St. Nicholas’ Day on December 6th in the animal shelter in Bonn.

“Christmas is the festival of love and, for us, that naturally includes the love of animals”, explains Fressnapf spokesman Achim Schütz. “Life is sad for dogs and cats in animal shelters. They don’t have a home or an owner to lovingly care for them”. “These animals deserve our attention, especially at Christmas, when we humans want to be generous”, says Schütz. He and his colleague Julia Stüeken from the Fressnapf press office, together with dog biscuit baker Horst Schuberth from Bergisches Land, baked almost 100 kilos of dough with lots of delicious beef and lamb. With around 2,000 dogs and cats, plenty of hungry mouths are already waiting in the 20 animal shelters for the giant Christmas angels and their tasty treats.

“It’s a lovely gesture that will be greatly appreciated by the staff and animals at the shelters”, explains Wolfgang Apel, president of the German animal welfare association. As well as this gesture, Fressnapf will also be making a donation as part of the campaign. All 20 animal shelters will each receive two pallets of dog and cat food, worth over 1,000 euros. It’s a donation that the animal shelters desperately need. “Many of the mainly voluntarily run animal shelters are on the brink of insolvency and animal protection work is under threat. Donations are decreasing, but without them and without the people that help us, the situation will get worse”, Apel stresses. “That’s why I would really like to thank Fressnapf and their local stores for their tireless commitment to animal welfare.”
