Animal welfare makes its mark: Deutscher Tierschutzbund receives 100,000 euro donation

Deutscher Tierschutzbund president Wolfgang Apel accepted a cheque for 100,000 euros from Fressnapf CEO Torsten Toeller in Krefeld, Germany. Fressnapf, who have been involved in animal welfare for many years now, called for customer donations during World Animal Week 2008. Customers made a personal mark for animal welfare with the campaign "Ich gebe Pfötchen" ("I give paw"). The campaign, in aid of the Deutsche Tierschutzbund, the German animal welfare association, ran from September 28th to October 8th in all of the around 700 Fressnapf stores in Germany.

Fressnapf employees created a path of paw prints through Krefeld’s city centre for the cheque handover with the motto "Animal welfare makes its mark". "This represents the commitment of all the animal lovers that took part in the fundraiser with us", said Torsten Toeller in the presence of Tierschutzbund president Wolfgang Apel and Krefeld Mayor Gregor Kathstede.

"This enormous amount allows us to help many animals in need. With this money, we can save many animals that have been disowned, abandoned or rescued from catastrophic situations. I am thrilled that so many people took part in this campaign, and with it made a real mark for animal welfare", said Apel.

Apel thanked Torsten Toeller and his company for their many years of cooperation and enormous support for animal shelters in need. Fressnapf is also a partner for the German pet register, which returns lost pets to their owners at no cost. This animal welfare service would not be possible without the help of Fressnapf stores.

Animal lovers took part in the campaign to support the Deutscher Tierschutzbund by buying paw stickers for one euro at Fressnapf’s around 700 German stores. These were then stuck to the store’s entrance door with donators’ names.
