Four-legged festivities: Fressnapf gives out gifts at 20 animal shelters
Fressnapf mascots Streifi and Flecki set off on their big Christmas tour today, full of festive cheer and with 5,000 dog biscuits and cat treats in their bags. Their mission? To spread Christmas cheer to the countless abandoned dogs and cats in Germany’s animal shelters. Over eleven days, the dog and cat, known from the Fressnapf logo, will visit a total of 20 animal shelters throughout the whole of Germany. It all kicks off this Wednesday in the Wuppertal animal shelter and the tour will end on 18th December, in Aachen.
When Streifi and Flecki swing their brimming full jute sacks over their shoulders, around 2,000 abandoned animals in the shelters can start licking their lips. The aim for the delicious-smelling dog biscuits and cat treats, baked by Fressnapf staff themselves, is to make everyday life “sweeter” for the animals in the shelters in the run up to Christmas. There is also a welcome bit of extra help in the form of an additional food donation. Each of the 20 animal shelters where the mascots stop will receive a pallet of food from Fressnapf - that’s more than a tonne of food - as a Christmas gift.
“We want our campaign to be an example of caring for animals and to draw attention to the extremely difficult conditions for animal shelters in Germany. The animals there, who are longing for a new home, are especially deserving of our attention and support at Christmas time”, says Fressnapf spokesman Achim Schütz.
Animal welfare workers, most of whom are volunteers, are having to care for more and more animals with ever dwindling financial resources. Thomas Schröder, president of the German animal welfare association (Deutscher Tierschutzbund e. V.) explains: “We are very grateful to Fressnapf and its franchise partners who always get behind us and the animal shelters with campaigns such as the Christmas tour. The animal shelters depend on donors and sponsors. It is only thanks to this kind of support that we are able to help the animals, who have often suffered a terrible fate.”
