Nr. 6 /2010: Flirting – the pet factor
Walking the dog is a great way to meet people, so it comes as no surprise that some four-legged friends also double as matchmakers. But it’s not just dog owners that have good cards when it comes to flirting – cat lovers also make attractive partners. The experts from specialty chain Maxi Zoo explain more about the pet factor in flirting.
Having a pet can be just as revealing as a profile on a dating website. Studies have long shown that people make certain assumptions about someone’s personality when they see them with a dog. Dog lovers are often attributed with being sociable, family-minded, responsible, and having leadership qualities and a love of life – and depending on the breed, a love of nature and physical exercise. Cat owners are considered individualists and sensitive personalities – which goes down well with women in particular. However, you have to overcome the first communication hurdle to discover that they have a feline housemate in the first place. With a dog, on the other hand, breaking the ice is rarely a problem, even for shy people.
Where to meet people
Experienced dog-walkers know that if you take the same route every day, especially in country areas, at some stage you will only meet the same people over and again. The chance of meeting someone new is much greater in places with a certain dynamic. In the city, for example, you will constantly come across new people – and can quickly strike up a conversation. Dog schools, public open spaces, dog parks or even going shopping for pet supplies all represent great opportunities for meeting and talking to like-minded people in a relaxed environment.
What you need to keep in mind
Some breeds such as Golden Retrievers or Labradors make their owners appear particularly attractive. But an unusual breed or a crossbreed can also be a good way to get talking to prospective partners. Just remember that your four-legged friend’s behaviour is very important when it comes to flirting – if they make a nuisance of themselves or are aggressive, you’re not likely to have much success.
If you are single and don't have a dog, but are looking for an animal lover, it helps to do your research. Maybe you have a friend that you can ask about dog-related topics of conversation. Or sniff around a bit and observe how dog owners interact with their pets. Sometimes complimenting a dog’s long, shiny coat or asking how old they are is all it takes to get a foot in the door. You could even borrow a dog for flirting if you want to take a more direct approach. However, you should only do this if you really do like animals and if you are sure that you can manage the dog by yourself.
And if you do hit it off, don’t forget that most pet owners are more likely to let their new partner go than their pet - so you should keep on good terms with the latter!
